The capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt has a colorful past as an imperial residence and a Hanseatic City. Numerous persons leave their mark on the city, but the self-imposed nickname "Otto City" honors in particular two of them: Emperor Otto the Great, who declared Magdeburg as a seat of the government of the Holy Roman Empire, and Otto von Guericke, who went down in history as a diplomat and scientist.
